Your child cannot sit still. Not just normal childhood energy. Something that is visibly different from their peers and that follows them across every setting. At home, at school, at the dinner table, in the car. Their body is in a state of constant movement that they do not appear to have much control over. Teachers have noticed it. You have noticed it for longer. Before a diagnosis is made or as part of managing one that already exists, understanding what is driving the hyperactivity at the nervous system level is the most useful place to start.

Hyperactivity and the Nervous System

Hyperactivity is a nervous system state, not a behavioral choice. The child whose body is in constant motion is not choosing to be disruptive. Their nervous system is stuck in sympathetic overdrive, the fight-or-flight activation state that produces physical restlessness, difficulty sustaining attention, and impulsive movement. The brainstem and upper cervical spine are the primary mechanical regulators of the autonomic nervous system shift between sympathetic activation and parasympathetic rest. When those levels are under interference, the transition from activated to settled is impaired. A 2024 pilot randomized controlled trial in Frontiers in Psychology found that chiropractic adjustment produced improvements in inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in children with ADHD, with the authors noting the need for larger trials to establish between-group significance. The child’s nervous system cannot downregulate efficiently, and the hyperactivity that results is the external expression of that impaired regulation.

Hyperactivity is most commonly associated with ADHD but can present without a formal diagnosis, particularly in younger children where the diagnostic threshold has not yet been met or where the presentation is primarily hyperactive rather than combined type. It also appears as a component of sensory processing disorder where the child seeks intense sensory input to regulate an under-responsive nervous system. Zone Technique assesses the nervous system interference driving the hyperactivity pattern regardless of whether a diagnosis has been applied.

Which Children Present With This Pattern

Hyperactivity as a primary presentation at Vita Nova most commonly involves preschool and early school-age children whose nervous system activation pattern is clearly outside the typical range but who do not yet have a formal diagnosis. Older children with an existing ADHD diagnosis whose hyperactive component is the most functionally impairing aspect of their presentation. Children with sensory processing patterns that involve sensory seeking and proprioceptive under-responsiveness. Children with a history of birth trauma or significant early stress exposure whose stress response system is chronically sensitized and produces sustained sympathetic activation as a baseline state.

How Dr. Korrin Approaches Hyperactivity Using Zone Technique

For hyperactivity, Zone Technique targets the nervous system interference maintaining the sympathetic overdrive state. The nervous zone(3) governs the brainstem and upper cervical pathways that regulate the autonomic nervous system balance. When Zone 3 is under interference at C1 and C2, the brainstem cannot modulate the shift between sympathetic activation and parasympathetic rest efficiently. The nervous system defaults to a hyperactivated state that produces the restlessness, impulsive movement, and difficulty settling that characterizes hyperactivity. The Zone Technique adjustment at the specific cervical levels where interference is found works to restore clearer brainstem regulation of that balance.

The glandular zone(1) governs cortisol and adrenaline regulation. Children with chronic hyperactivity frequently have elevated baseline sympathetic tone driven by dysregulated stress hormones. Zone 1 interference at the hormonal signaling level contributes to the sustained activation pattern. Dr. Korrin assesses both zones at every visit and adjusts at the levels where interference is found, always adapting the approach to the child’s age, sensory profile, and tolerance.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

Your child’s first visit begins with a Zone Technique assessment of the full nervous system. Dr. Korrin evaluates all six zones and identifies where interference is present. The assessment takes 15 to 20 minutes. He will ask about when the hyperactivity pattern was first noticed, how it presents across different settings, whether a formal evaluation or diagnosis has been done, what the birth history looks like, and what has already been tried. For children who have difficulty sitting still during an assessment, Dr. Korrin adapts the evaluation approach accordingly. The assessment does not require the child to stay completely still.

Hyperactivity frequently presents alongside inattention and impulsivity as part of a broader ADHD presentation. If your child has a formal ADHD diagnosis, the ADHD chiropractic care page covers how Zone Technique approaches the full presentation. For behavioral challenges that accompany the hyperactivity, the Zone Technique assessment addresses both the activation pattern and the behavioral dysregulation in the same evaluation. The pediatric chiropractic care page covers the full scope of what Dr. Korrin does for children at Vita Nova.

Dr. Korrin is accepting new pediatric patients at Vita Nova in Plano, TX. Schedule your child’s first visit to find out whether the hyperactivity has a nervous system component that Zone Technique can address.
