Frequently Asked Questions

Back Pain and Chiropractic Care — Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions patients ask most before their first visit at Vita Nova. Dr. Korrin answers them directly.

Can a chiropractor help with back pain?

Yes, and for most mechanical back pain presentations, chiropractic care is one of the most effective first-line approaches available. The research supports it: evidence from clinical guidelines consistently identifies spinal manipulation as an appropriate treatment for lower back pain, both acute and chronic. At Vita Nova, Dr. Korrin uses Zone Technique rather than generic spinal manipulation. The assessment identifies which zones of the nervous system are under interference and adjusts at the specific spinal levels where that interference is found. The result is a more targeted approach than a general chiropractic adjustment, and it addresses the neurological pattern maintaining the pain rather than just the structural location where you feel it.

What is actually causing my back pain?

Back pain is a signal, not a diagnosis. The lumbar spine is involved in nearly every load-bearing movement the body makes, and the nervous system running through it is sensitive to structural, mechanical, and neurological disruption. The most common drivers are disc involvement at L4-L5 or L5-S1, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, nerve root irritation producing sciatica, and chronic muscle guarding that has built up over months of the body compensating for an underlying problem. A herniated disc or bulging disc pressing against a nerve root is the most common source of back pain that also radiates into the leg. Back pain that stays local and does not radiate usually involves the facet joints, SI joint, or disc without significant nerve contact. The Zone Technique assessment distinguishes between these presentations at the first visit because the adjustment approach differs between them.

How is Zone Technique different from regular chiropractic for back pain?

Most chiropractic adjustments for back pain are made at the location of pain or at the area of structural restriction identified on exam. Zone Technique starts with the nervous system instead. Dr. Korrin evaluates the body through six zones to identify where nervous system interference is disrupting the brain-body communication that keeps the muscles supporting the spine functioning properly. For back pain, the nervous zone(3) governs the lumbar nerve roots and the peripheral nerve pathways into the lower extremities. The muscular zone(5) tracks the chronic muscle guarding pattern that frequently sustains back pain long after the original structural trigger has resolved. The adjustment is made at the spinal level where interference is found in those zones, not at the location where you feel the pain. For back pain that has not responded to previous treatment, this distinction is usually what was missing from prior care.

How many visits will I need to feel relief from my back pain?

Most patients with acute back pain at Vita Nova start with two visits per week for the first two to three weeks, then reassess based on how the nervous system is responding. Acute lower back pain that comes in early, within the first two to three weeks of onset, typically responds within six to ten visits. Chronic back pain that has been present for months or years takes longer because the nervous system interference pattern has been established for a longer period and the surrounding musculature has adapted to it. Dr. Korrin reviews the Zone Technique assessment findings at every visit and adjusts care frequency based on what is changing. He gives you a real range at the first visit, not a vague open-ended commitment, because you need to plan your schedule and budget.

Should I see a chiropractor or a doctor for back pain?

For most mechanical back pain, starting with a chiropractor is appropriate and is what many clinical care guidelines recommend before moving to injections or surgery. A Zone Technique assessment at Vita Nova will tell you what is driving your back pain neurologically and structurally, which helps you understand the full picture regardless of what other providers you also see. There are situations where medical evaluation should come first or happen alongside chiropractic care: any progressive leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel function associated with back pain, back pain following a significant fall or trauma, or back pain accompanied by unexplained weight loss. These need imaging and medical evaluation urgently. For the vast majority of back pain presentations, those signals are absent and chiropractic care is the right starting point. If Dr. Korrin finds something in the assessment that is outside chiropractic scope, he will tell you directly and refer you appropriately.

What can I do at home between visits?

The habits that hold the Zone Technique adjustment longest between visits are specific to back pain. Avoid sitting for more than 45 to 60 minutes without standing and moving for two to three minutes. Sustained lumbar flexion in a desk chair is the single most common way patients undo an adjustment before the next visit. Sleep with a pillow between your knees on your side, or under your knees if you sleep on your back. Both reduce overnight rotational load on the lumbar spine and SI joints. Keep the lumbar curve supported in any chair you use regularly. A small rolled towel behind the lower back prevents the curve from flattening, which is the mechanical driver of most desk-worker back pain. Avoid bending and twisting at the same time. Most acute back flare-ups happen not from heavy lifting but from light awkward tasks done with the spine loaded in rotation.
