Is Chiropractic Safe for Babies?

This is the question I get asked more than any other, usually from a parent who’s already nervous just walking through the door. I’d rather answer it honestly than just tell you “yes, trust me,” because the honest answer actually has more nuance to it, and I think that nuance is what actually puts parents at ease once they understand it.

The Short Answer

Gentle mobilization, which is what I use on infants, has a very different safety profile than the higher-force adjustment techniques used on adults. That distinction matters more than almost anything else in this conversation, and it’s the part most articles gloss over.

What the Research Actually Shows

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis published in PLOS One looked specifically at spinal manual therapy in infants, children, and adolescents, and found something I think every nervous parent should hear. The serious harms reported in the literature, and there were very few, almost all involved high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust techniques, the kind of forceful adjustment you’d picture from adult chiropractic care. Gentle, low-velocity mobilization, the kind I actually use on infants, was associated only with mild, transient effects, things like fussiness or a short period of irritability, nothing serious.

A separate rapid review in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies came to a similar conclusion when it looked specifically at children under 10. The adverse events they found tended to cluster around forceful thrust techniques, not gentle mobilization. I want to be straight with you, this doesn’t mean zero risk exists, no medical or manual therapy has zero risk. It means the technique matters, a lot, and it’s the first thing I’d want any parent to ask about before bringing their baby in anywhere.

What I Actually Do

When I adjust an infant, the pressure I use is about what you’d use pressing on your own closed eyelid and still being completely comfortable. That’s it. There’s no thrust, no cracking, no forceful movement of any kind. I’m feeling for where a joint isn’t moving the way it should, and I hold gentle pressure until I feel it release. That’s the whole adjustment. It’s not a smaller version of what I’d do on an adult, it’s a fundamentally different, much gentler technique built specifically for a baby’s developing spine.

What I Screen for Before Any Adjustment

Before I ever touch a baby, I take a full history. Birth history, any diagnosed conditions, anything your pediatrician has already flagged. This matters because the rare serious cases in the research almost always involved an underlying condition that hadn’t been identified yet, not the adjustment itself causing harm out of nowhere. If anything in that history raises a question, I’m not adjusting that day, I’m sending you back to your pediatrician first. I’d rather lose a visit than take a risk that isn’t mine to take.

When I See Babies Most Often

The most common reasons parents bring an infant to me are torticollis, where a baby consistently favors turning one direction, and colic, the kind of prolonged crying that’s exhausted every parent in the room by week six. I’ve written about the broader list of signs I look for in babies if you want the fuller picture beyond just the safety question.

What to Expect at a First Visit

I’ll ask about your baby’s birth history and anything you’ve already noticed. Then I do a hands-on assessment as part of pediatric chiropractic care, checking specifically where restriction is present before I do anything else. If I don’t find anything, I’ll tell you that directly. Most babies stay completely calm through the whole thing, a lot of them fall asleep.

If you’ve got questions before you ever book, I’d rather you ask me directly than sit with the worry. Schedule a visit and I’ll walk you through exactly what I find.
