Parents bring their children to Vita Nova for a wide range of reasons. Some come in the first weeks of life after a difficult delivery. Some come at two or three years old with a colic or reflux pattern that has not resolved. Some come with school-age kids dealing with ADHD, frequent ear infections, or sensory challenges. Some come with teenagers dealing with postural issues, sports injuries, or headaches. The common thread is the same in every case: a nervous system that is not communicating as clearly as it should, and a parent looking for someone who can assess and address that directly rather than managing symptoms at the surface.

Why Children Benefit From Chiropractic Care

The nervous system governs every function in a child’s body: growth, immune response, digestion, sleep, motor development, focus, and emotional regulation. From the moment of birth the nervous system is under load. The birthing process itself, whether vaginal or cesarean, places mechanical stress on the upper cervical spine, particularly the C1 and C2 levels surrounding the brainstem. That stress is often subtle enough that no one identifies it in the newborn period. Over weeks and months it can express itself as feeding difficulty, colic, asymmetrical head positioning, or sleep disruption that does not resolve on its own.

As children grow, the load changes. Falls during the learning-to-walk phase, the sustained forward head posture of screen time, the impact of contact sports, and the postural demands of sitting in school for six hours a day all create mechanical stress in the developing spine. The spine is more elastic and adaptive in childhood than in adulthood, which means it responds to care more quickly. It also means that patterns established early compound over time if they are not addressed.

A 2024 review in Clinical Pediatrics published by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital found that chiropractic care is among the most commonly used complementary therapies in children and adolescents, reflecting the growing number of families who are incorporating it into their child’s care alongside conventional pediatric medicine. Zone Technique is particularly well-suited to pediatric care because it evaluates the nervous system across all six body zones rather than focusing on where symptoms are most obvious.

Pediatric Patients Dr. Korrin Sees at Vita Nova

Dr. Korrin sees children at every stage from the newborn period through adolescence. The presentations vary by age and developmental stage but the Zone Technique assessment approach is consistent across all of them.

Newborns and infants come in most often for colic, reflux, feeding difficulty, sleep disruption, and asymmetrical head positioning or torticollis. These presentations frequently have an upper cervical component from the birthing process that was not identified or addressed in the hospital. The pressure used for infant adjustment is lighter than what you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato. There is no forceful manipulation, no cracking, nothing that looks like adult chiropractic care. The infant chiropractic care page covers newborn and early infant presentations in detail.

Toddlers and preschool-age children come in most often for ear infections, recurrent illness, motor delays, and the falls and impacts that are part of early childhood. The Zone Technique assessment for a two-year-old takes the same approach as for an adult, evaluating all six zones, but the adjustment technique is adapted entirely for the child’s size and developmental stage.

School-age children and teenagers come in most often for headaches, postural issues from sustained screen time and backpack load, sports injuries, ADHD and focus challenges, and sensory processing difficulties. This age group responds quickly to Zone Technique care because the nervous system is still highly adaptive and the interference patterns have typically not had decades to establish themselves.

How Zone Technique Works for Children

Zone Technique evaluates the nervous system through six body zones. For pediatric patients, the zones most commonly involved vary by presentation but the assessment is always complete. All six zones are evaluated at every visit regardless of where the primary complaint is located.

The glandular zone(1) governs immune function, hormonal signaling, and growth. For children with recurrent ear infections, frequent illness, or immune dysregulation, Zone 1 interference is almost always part of the picture. The nervous zone(3) governs brainstem function, upper cervical nerve pathways, and the peripheral nervous system. For infants with colic or torticollis, toddlers with motor delays, or school-age children with neurological presentations, Zone 3 interference at upper cervical levels is the most consistent finding. The digestive zone(4) governs gut function and is directly relevant for reflux, colic, constipation, and food sensitivity presentations. The muscular zone(5) tracks the tone and coordination patterns in the musculature, relevant for motor delays, torticollis, postural asymmetry, and sports injury presentations.

Dr. Korrin assesses all six zones at every pediatric visit and adjusts at the specific spinal levels where interference is found. The adjustment for a child is adapted for their age, size, and comfort level at every visit.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children and Babies?

Yes. Pediatric chiropractic care is safe when performed by a provider with specific pediatric training. A systematic review in Chiropractic and Manual Therapies examining the safety of spinal manipulative therapy in children under 10 years found the risk of serious adverse events to be very low when care is provided by trained practitioners using age-appropriate technique. A systematic scoping review by Milne et al. in BMC Pediatrics similarly found that spinal manipulation and mobilisation in infants, children, and adolescents is broadly practiced and generally well-tolerated when technique is adapted for the patient’s developmental stage.

The question most parents are actually asking when they ask about safety is whether what they imagine chiropractic to look like, the adult adjustment with audible popping, is what will happen to their child. It is not. What a pediatric Zone Technique assessment and adjustment looks like is closer to a careful physical assessment with gentle, specific fingertip pressure at specific spinal levels. Most children, including infants, tolerate it without distress. Many fall asleep during the assessment.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

Your child’s first visit begins with a Zone Technique assessment of the full nervous system. Dr. Korrin evaluates all six zones to identify where interference is present, then focuses on the levels most relevant to your child’s primary presentation. The assessment takes 15 to 20 minutes. He will ask about your child’s birth history, developmental milestones, current complaints, and what has already been evaluated or tried. Birth history is particularly important for infants and toddlers because the delivery process is the most common source of upper cervical mechanical stress in young children.

A few things that help make the first visit go smoothly:

  • Bring any prior evaluations or reports. Developmental assessments, pediatric neurology notes, early intervention records, or imaging all help. The fuller the picture, the more precisely the Zone Technique assessment can be directed.
  • Feed your infant before the visit if possible. Calm, recently-fed infants tolerate the assessment most easily.
  • Let your child bring a comfort item. Older toddlers and preschoolers do better with a familiar toy or blanket in the room.
  • Plan 45 minutes for the first visit. The assessment is 15 to 20 minutes but the conversation before and after takes time. Subsequent visits are faster.

You are present for the entire assessment and adjustment. Dr. Korrin explains what he is finding and what he is doing throughout the visit. The adjustment for an infant or young child takes less than two minutes.
